On Fridays, students will use 15 minutes of class time to reflect on their week or record random thoughts in their daybooks. It doesn't matter how much you write, as long as you write consecutively for 15 minutes. Use these simple rules and journaling will not only be fun and freeing, but it will become a part of your daily life. 1) Keep it Simple 2) Keep it Private 3) Do it Frequently 4) Banish the Grammar Police 5) Write What You Know 6) Write for quantity, not quality 7) Try Writing by Hand 8) Keep the Stakes Low 9) Enjoy yourself! iRead - 30 min independent fun reading! This exercise can boost academic achievements, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal skills and achievement test.
1) Choose ANY literature or informational texts you want and read uninterrupted for 30 minutes. 2) Write (4 – 5 sentences) about what you read. (This can help with processing and retention)

Trailer: American Assassin (based off the best-selling novel by Vince Flynn) ~All trailers are based off books or true events~ ~These trailers help spark student interest in independent reading. After seeing the trailer, any novel that they are interested in, I will purchase for their iRead...LET'S GET STUDENTS READING AGAIN!~ DAYBOOK: Give a review for a movie trailer (4 – 5 sentences). Make sure to explain your review. Really think about what did or didn’t you like about it. The actors, the plot, the setting. Did you know the person the movie is based off? Did you like the fact that it was historical or sci-fi? Why would you go see it? Why wouldn’t you see it? Article of the Day - Upfront Magazine (if you are absent, you may choose an online source for your news article)

Article should be at least 4 paragraphs long and have enough "meat" to it that you can summarize the article and add your own opinion to it. 2) Read the article to make sure you understand what it is talking about. 3) Write a paragraph (4 - 5 sentences) summarizing the article. Be sure you have factual information included in your summary. Make sure you state where you found your article (which newspaper / online source). WHAT ARE THE MAIN POINTS THE ARTICLE IS TRYING TO GET ACROSS TO THE READER? 4. Write another paragraph (4 - 5 sentences) with your opinion on the article.
