Short Story Fair - Projects due end of day, Wed, 10/5 (Presentations on Thur, 10/6)
Students will work in groups over the next five days to complete 3 projects and a writing assignment for 3 separate short stories. Please make sure to review all the instructions and guidelines to receive the highest marks possible. Good luck!
Challenge:
Each group will create ONE project for the following stories: (3 Total)
- The Rocking-Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence
- Reunion by John Cheever
- Untitled by John Green
There will also be an INDIVIDUAL writing assignment to ensure that all students know the text and can determine the central theme and literary devices, and demonstrate their inference skills.
Grading: (Projects and Writing assignments are weighted 30%)
- Each project will account for 33.33% of the group grade.
- The writing assignment will be one individual grade.
- Each member will be evaluated by their group and receive an individual participation grade.

Pick 1 question and answer in a 500 word essay (Times New Roman, 12pt font, single spaced (1 full page), double spaced (2 full pages), include heading. Use complete sentences, paragraph form, and details from the story.
Participation – Individual Assignment
The day of presentations, members will evaluate each other to give a participation grade.

An infomercial is a television program that promotes a product in an informative and supposedly objective way.

- You must have a group pass before you leave the classroom and you must check back in with me 10 minutes before the end of class
- You must read all 3 stories before your group may begin
- You must stick together as a group, any members reported not working or helping will be sent to ISS to create their own written project
- You will have the entire class period to work on your project (use your time wisely)
- Assign an equipment manager (manager will be responsible for making sure all equipment is turned back in)
- You must sign out equipment before you leave the room
- BE MINDFUL OF NOISE IN THE HALLWAYS, COURTYARD AND BUS LOBBY
- ALL VIDEOS MUST BE EDITED AND UPLOADED TO MY SCHOOL YOUTUBE (PRIVATE) ACCOUNT THE DAY BEFORE WE PRESENT

- If you could change the ending of the story, how would you change it? Why would you make this change? How would it change the story?
- Which character in the story do you identify with most? Why? What does the author do to make this character seem connected to you?
- Explain why you would want to read more of this author’s stories. Support your answer with details from the story and connect them to your own personal observations and/or experiences.
- If you were judging a short story contest, what award would you give this story (most exciting, most amusing, most realistic, most ironic, etc)? Explain why you would choose this award and provide evidence from the story to support your ideas.

- Title, author, quick bio fact
- Characters, setting, plot, climax (basically a summary of events and people)
- Conflict Type, theme, tone, symbolism
- Analyze a specific quote
- Overall analysis of text (ie. Mother and son relationship, dangers of greed)
- Something creative or interesting about the way the author wrote the story (ie. Reunion has simple dialogue that speaks volumes about the father’s character flaws)
Short Story Model
- Model must include several 3D elements
- Must include title and author
- Model must depict a specific or powerful scene in the text
- Model should clearly portray literary elements of the short story – USE LABELS (ie. Symbolism, theme, powerful quotes or dialogue, tone)
- Use your own artistic creativity to demonstrate insight into the story, analysis of the story elements and competence and correctness
News Broadcast (or Infomercial)
- Your Broadcast must be 3 minutes long
- You must videotape and edit your Broadcast
- You must design a station logo and appropriate “studio”
- You must include several references to the story
- Turn in a paper listing exactly what each group member contributed to the Broadcast
- To receive an A, your Broadcast should have something serendipitous -- style, wit, grace, beauty. I know it when I see it (and so do you)

- You must design a branding logo and appropriate setting
- You must include several references to the story
- Turn in a paper listing exactly what each group member contributed to the Infomercial
- Infomercial must demonstrate insight into the stories, analysis of story elements, and competence and correctness in writing
- To receive an A, your Infomercial should have something serendipitous -- style, wit, grace, beauty. I know it when I see it (and so do you)
